Your Chevelle on a poster, the way you built it

A Chevelle is rarely stock. It has the cowl hood you added, the Cragars you saved for, the stripes the factory never put on it. A poster of somebody else's Chevelle would be wrong in ten places, so we only make one from a photo of yours.

27 owners have ordered one so far, all in the US: 19 Chevelles and 8 of their pickup cousin, the El Camino. Here are real examples, the years people bring, and how to photograph yours.

Which Chevelles owners order

Our Chevelle orders sit almost entirely in the 1964 to 1972 A-body years, and they spread over all of them. The 1968 to 1969 cars are the largest group, then the 1970 to 1972 cars with the quad headlights, then the 1966 to 1967 hardtops. Many are SS cars or wear SS badges now. One owner's dad bought the car new.

The El Caminos run from a 1966 to an early-1980s car, with most from 1968 to 1974.

§ 03

Where owners put their Chevelle

Ten of the 27 owners described their own scene. Their picks are pure Americana: a bridge over the Mississippi between cornfields, the back roads of North Dakota at sunset, South Jersey in fall color, the Million Dollar Highway in Colorado, the North Carolina coast, an old garage on a farm.

From our list, the drag strip is a Chevelle favorite, tied with the Pacific Coast Highway and Route 66. It makes sense. A lot of these cars have seen a Christmas tree light up.

§ 04

How to photograph a Chevelle for a poster

Stand at the front three-quarter and crouch to grille height. That shows the grille and headlights, which is the quickest way to tell a 1966 from a 1968 from a 1970, plus the full side with the stripes and the wheels.

Get the hood in the shot. Cowl induction, an SS domed hood or a flat Malibu hood change the whole look, and they are hard to guess from a side view. Same for the stance: if the car sits low in the back or high in the rear on drag radials, we want to see it.

Tell us the paint name if you know it, and anything the photo hides: vinyl top color, a black-out tail panel, the exact wheel. Leave the plate on and we can remove it.
