Gifts for car guys that don't end up in a drawer

Ask a car guy what he wants and he will say "nothing." Ask the internet and you get keychains, socks with pistons on them and a mug that says "I'd rather be in my garage." One car guy put it plainly in a YouTube comment that more than 1,600 people liked: please don't buy me car guy stuff.

What does land is something about his car, or time spent with it. Below are 12 gifts that do one or the other, at different budgets. We make the first one, so we say why it is first. The other eleven we don't sell, and we'd recommend them anyway.

12 gifts for car guys and car lovers

Roughly from most personal to most practical. Where prices swing too much to be honest about, we say so.

  1. 01

A poster of his own car

    $59–$449

Not a car. His car, his color, his wheels, on a road he knows, printed as a vintage-style travel poster. About a quarter of our reviews come from someone who ordered it for a husband or partner, and the line we hear most is some version of "I never know what to get him." You see the design free before you pay, so you can check it is really his car before it becomes a gift. Works for a car he sold years ago too.

  2. 02

A drive on a famous road

    varies

Plan a weekend on Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap, the Blue Ridge Parkway or Pacific Coast Highway. Book the hotel, map the stops, ride along. It costs gas and a room, and he will tell the story for years.

  3. 03

A track day or driving school

    varies

A high-performance driving event (HPDE) or a one-day school at a local circuit. The best gift for the guy who has the car but never gets to use it properly. Check what his car needs to pass tech inspection first.

  4. 04

A scale model of his exact car

    varies

A 1:18 diecast in the right year and color sits well on a desk or next to a print of the same car. Rare models and colors are hard to find, so start early.

  5. 05

Tickets to a big show or a car museum

    varies

A national show, an auction weekend or a museum he has talked about. Go with him. The day out is the gift.

  6. 06

    A proper detailing kit

    varies

A pH-neutral wash, a stack of good microfiber towels, a two-bucket setup and a quality sealant. Car guys notice the difference between this and a gas-station kit.

  7. 07

    A battery maintainer

    varies

For the car that sits all winter. Unexciting, used every year, and it saves him a dead battery in April.

  8. 08

    Garage upgrades

    varies

Bright LED shop lights, a rolling creeper or a mechanic's stool. Look at what he works around with now and replace the worst one.

  9. 09

    Membership in his marque club

    varies

Most popular makes have a national owners' club with events, a magazine and local chapters. It gives him people to drive with.

  10. 10

A book about his model or era

    varies

A well-made history of his car, its designers or the races it ran. Pick one about his car, not cars in general.

  11. 11

Factory paperwork for an older car

    varies

For many classic Fords and GM cars you can order build records that show how the car left the factory. For the original-owner type, it is the paper version of the car's birth certificate.

  12. 12

A dash cam or a portable tire inflator

    varies

For his daily driver. Practical, used every week, and nothing he will feel obliged to keep on a shelf.

Why the poster comes first

Most gifts on this list are things he would buy himself sooner or later. A picture of his own car on the wall is not one of them. Car guys have hundreds of photos of their car on their phone and none on the wall.

Ask on Reddit what to buy a car guy and one of the top answers is an artsy poster of his favorite car. Our own customers say why in their reviews: the details are right, it is the right color, and it brings back a road they once drove. A customer with a 1966 Beetle and a matching trailer called it everything a car guy could want.

Poster of a red 1979 Ford F-100 flareside on a dirt ranch road at sunset with a windmill and cattle
fig. 011979 F-100 flareside on a Texas ranch road. The customer described the windmill, the cows and the barbed wire.
Illustrated poster of a Clearwater Aqua 1967 Ford Mustang coupe on an autumn New England road
fig. 021967 Mustang coupe in Clearwater Aqua, original wheels, on an autumn New England road.
Poster of a silver Volkswagen Karmann Ghia with gold mesh wheels on a road through a tall cornfield
fig. 03A Karmann Ghia on gold mesh wheels, between two walls of corn. The owner picked the scene.
Vertical poster of a blue early-1960s Chevrolet Corvair convertible on Route 66 in the desert
fig. 04A Corvair convertible on Route 66, in a vertical format for a narrow wall.

Gifts by occasion and by car

The right gift depends on the moment as much as the man. These guides go deeper.

By occasion: gifts for a dad who loves cars, Christmas gifts for car guys, birthday gifts for a car guy, retirement gifts for a car guy, and gifts for the car guy who has everything. For the car he sold years ago, read how to remember a car you sold.

By car: gifts for classic car lovers, Corvette owners, Jeep owners, Porsche lovers, BMW owners, motorcycle riders and Harley riders. And for the friend who lost a dog or cat, our pet memorial gifts guide.

§ 04

What to skip

Novelty items with a generic car on them. Parts and tools for a car you don't know well: a wrong-size socket set is worse than none. Branded clothing for a make he doesn't drive. And gift cards to auto parts stores, unless he has asked for one; they tend to buy brake pads.

If you only know one thing about cars, know his car: make, model, year, color. That is enough for the best gift on this list.

Questions

What gift to get a car guy?

Something about his own car or time with it: a poster of his car, a drive on a famous road, a track day or a scale model of his exact model. Skip generic car-themed novelties.

What do you buy a man who loves his car?

A picture of that car. A poster of his own car, in his color, on a road he likes, is personal in a way a tool or gadget is not. You can see the design for free before you buy.

What is the 5 gift rule for men?

It is a family rule that limits gifts to five kinds: something he wants, something he needs, something to wear, something to read and something to do. For a car guy: a poster of his car (want), a battery maintainer (need), his club's jacket (wear), a book on his model (read), a track day (do).

What are good gifts for a classic car enthusiast?

Factory build records for his car, membership in his marque club, a scale model of the right year, and a poster of the car on a road from its era. Our classic car lovers guide has more.

What is a good gift for a car lover on a budget?

A quality detailing kit or a battery maintainer. A 12 × 16 in poster of his car is $59 with free US shipping.
