Personalized cat gifts for people whose cat runs the house

Cat owners are hard to shop for in one specific way: they already have the mug that says ‘cat mom’. What they don't have is anything that shows their cat, the actual one, with the crooked white blaze and the one torn ear.

Here are nine personalized cat gifts, from the name on a collar to a portrait of the cat. We make the portrait, so it's first, with our reasons. The rest are common categories found in pet and gift shops; prices vary.

9 personalized cat gifts

  1. 01

A portrait of the cat, in a style that suits a cat

    $59–$449

From one photo of the cat. A cat doesn't do walks, so put them where they rule: the sunny window seat at home, or a place you describe. Or go grand: the Old Master style can give one cat the pearl earring and blue-and-ochre turban of Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. Field Study prints the cat's name with Felis catus beneath, like a plate from a natural-history atlas. Up to four animals on one print, cats and dogs, at no extra charge.

  2. 02

A breakaway collar with the name embroidered

    varies

For cats, choose a collar with a breakaway safety buckle, which releases if it snags. The name and number stitched in.

  3. 03

    An engraved ID tag

    varies

Small and light enough for a cat collar. Useful for indoor cats that slip out.

  4. 04

A mug with the cat's face

    varies

The morning coffee, watched by the cat on the mug and the cat on the counter.

  5. 05

A pillow cut to the cat's shape

    varies

Printed from a photo. Silly, and cats have been known to sleep on their own pillow.

  6. 06

A sweatshirt with the cat's name on the sleeve

    varies

Subtle enough for outside the house, which the cat-face shirt is not.

  7. 07

A food bowl or placemat with the name

    varies

Ceramic, heavy enough not to be pushed off the counter. Probably.

  8. 08

A name sign for the cat tree or bed

    varies

A small wooden plaque. Settles the question of whose spot it is.

  9. 09

A holiday ornament with the cat's name

    varies

Hang it high, out of paw's reach.

§ 02

Why the portrait is worth it for a cat

Cats are easy to get wrong. Almost every tabby carries an M on its forehead, but the stripes run differently on each side. A calico's patches are a map no other cat shares. Some cats have one blue eye and one gold. We keep every marking on the side where it is in the photo, never mirrored, and keep a pale coat pale, not warmed to orange by the palette. A person checks each animal against its own photo before it prints.

You see the design free in about a minute, and can change it up to five times. After you order, you see the full-size proof, ask for edits as often as you need, and nothing prints until you approve it.

Getting a cat photo without the cat noticing

Cats look away the moment a phone appears. Wait for them by a window in daylight, at their eye level, and take a burst. A photo of just the head is enough. If you're buying for someone else, their social media almost certainly has the cat on it many times; save the sharpest one.

Prices start at $59 for a 12 × 16 in fine-art print. Framed prints are $119–$329, canvas $99–$249. US shipping is free and tracked, with discreet packaging and a gift message at checkout.

Questions

What are good personalized gifts for someone who loves cats?

Something with their own cat in it. A portrait of the cat is the most personal; a mug or pillow with the cat's photo is lighter; a breakaway collar or tag with the name is practical.

Can I put two cats, or a cat and a dog, on one portrait?

Yes, up to four animals, each from its own photo, at no extra charge. Each keeps its true size, so the cat stays cat-sized next to a big dog.

My cat has odd-colored eyes. Will that come out right?

Each eye keeps its own color on its own side, as in the photo. Juul in the sample above has one gold eye and one blue. If anything is off, say so in words and it's corrected against the photo.
