BMW gifts for the owner who knows their chassis code

BMW people speak in chassis codes. Ask about their car and you will hear E30, E46 or G87 before you hear a model name. They know which engine it has, which wheels it left the factory on and which ones they would rather have. A generic roundel keyring does not stand much of a chance.

These nine ideas are about their car and about driving it. The first is ours: a poster of the exact BMW they own, made from a photo you take, previewed free before you pay.

9 gifts for BMW owners

  1. 01

A poster of their own BMW

    $59–$449

Their 2002, E30, Z3 or M2, in its color and on its wheels, on a road like the Pacific Coast Highway, the Overseas Highway or the Stelvio. Send one photo, see the free preview, and check the details a BMW owner checks first: kidney grilles, wheel style, M badges.

  2. 02

A day at the BMW Performance Center

    varies

BMW runs driving schools in Spartanburg, South Carolina and Thermal, California. A day on track with an instructor is the gift most owners would never book for themselves.

  3. 03

A BMW Car Club of America membership

    varies

Local chapters run drives, tech days and driver schools, and members swear by the club magazine.

  4. 04

    A quality OBD-II scanner

    varies

BMW owners like to know why a light is on before the dealer tells them. A good scanner pays for itself the first time.

  5. 05

    A high-performance driving event

    varies

Club track days are the cheaper alternative to a factory school, and just as much fun.

  6. 06

    Detailing supplies

    varies

A pH-neutral wash, a soft mitt, good microfiber and a leather conditioner. Older BMW leather needs it.

  7. 07

    A fitted car cover

    varies

For the weekend car in the garage. Cut for the right body: an E30 and a G82 are not the same shape.

  8. 08

A scale model of their car

    varies

Pick the exact generation and, if you can, the color. A Z3 roadster in Cosmos Black beats any generic BMW model.

  9. 09

    Driving gloves

    varies

Thin and close-fitting for better feel at the wheel. Check their size before you buy.

Real BMWs from our customers

Our BMW orders run from 2002s and 3.0 CS coupes to the newest M cars. These four came from customers' own photos, with no plates and no people in them. The E30 M3 is one of our sample posters.

§ 03

A photo that shows the BMW details

Shoot the front three-quarter at headlight height. That angle shows the kidney grilles, the headlights and one wheel, which is most of what tells one generation from the next. Step back and zoom in a little instead of standing close, so the grilles do not bulge.

If the car has M Sport parts, aftermarket wheels or a color the factory called something specific, name it in your notes. A small M badge or a wheel design is easy to misread in a phone photo, and naming it saves a round of changes. Our photo guide explains the rest.

From customers

“Print turned out great. My husband loved this car. Regrettably a young person misjudged a turn and crashed into him, totaling the car. Fortunately, all the people were unhurt. This print makes a great memory. BMW no longer makes this model car. He has the print hanging by his desk in the office.”
Vivian T., her husband's BMW 640i
“I was so amazed that your studio was able to put the top down and having you as a human editor helped with that final finesse…”
Steven R., 1996 BMW Z3 Convertible
“If you are considering a Vellum purchase, I highly recommend this company and product. Just make sure to carefully inspect the digital version of your creation before pulling the trigger.”
Valerie M., 2022 BMW Z4

Questions

What is a good gift for a BMW owner?

A poster of their own BMW, a day at the BMW Performance Center, a BMW CCA membership or a good OBD-II scanner. Pick the one that matches how they use the car.

Can you make a poster of a car that no longer exists?

Yes. All we need is a photo, even an old one. Customers order posters of cars they sold or lost, and the print keeps the car in the house.

How much does a custom BMW poster cost?

From $59 for a 12 × 16 in fine-art print to $449 for a 28 × 40 in canvas in a float frame, with free US shipping.
